Learn How to Bake a Cake Without Using a Box

Learn How Easy it is to Bake a Cake from Scratch!

Today we’re conquering fears and gaining new skills! ‘Cause today we are ditching the box and learning how easy it is to bake a cake from scratch!

I’m not kidding.

Learning how to bake a cake isn’t tricky at all! I’m not sure how folks got it into their minds that it is an advanced kitchen skill. It’s not. So long as you have a good recipe and a few tips, baking gorgeous and delicious layer cakes for your special occasions in life is… sorry, I’ve got to say it… a piece of cake. Ugh. So cheesy, but there it is and I’m not taking it back.

When you break it all down, there are really only five steps (3 of which you have to do with a box cake anyway).

1.) Cream the butter and sugar.
2.) Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
3.) Whisk the dry ingredients.
4.) Mix the wet ingredients.
5.) Mix it all together.

It’s so easy to bake a cake in fact that I’m going to show you that my 8-year-old son, Ben, can do it!

I taught Ben step-by-step how to bake his sister Chloe’s cake for her fifth birthday last week. Did it get messed up? Yes. But that was totally not Ben’s fault. Chloe wanted a Lemon Poppyseed Cake from my cookbook Cake Stand, but when my back was turned Phoebe (3) decided to add a bit of egg yolk into the meringue frosting and that’s a big no-no so the meringue never was able to get airy. Thankfully, Raspberry Buttercream is easy to whip up and what little girl doesn’t like pink frosting?

  1. When I was a kid my mom made every cake from scratch. She made the most beautiful angel food cakes with a wire whisk. They rose three inches above the the cake pan. I cherish her recipes.

  2. How exciting would love to win this giveaway -never owned a stand mixer-thanks for the exciting offer and a chance

    1. I very rarely enter competitions/giveaways, as the prize being offered isn’t a good fit for me. This one however I’m truly hoping to win! I would love to add more baking items and knowledge to my homesteading skills!
      Thank you, Quinn!

  3. Thank you so much for such an awesome giveaway. Love your site. Keep up the great work.
Have an allergenic grandson, so baking cake from scratch is the way to go for me.

  4. I tried making a cake while in high school and failed miserably and haven’t tried since. I just cant seem to get back on the horse again. I did bake again, sticky buns, under the supervision of the head cook on my submarine. But that was really the last time. I might try again with the proper motivation and better kitchen equipment! LOL
