- 30 August, 2010

I have a tendency to try to accomplish learning all of the new things I’m interested in all at once. That leaves me feeling burnt out (much like I have been over the last two weeks), never really learning anything well, and never establishing good habits. I had been contemplating doing something similar to this challenge anyway- in a way I already do in my homemaking binder where I each month has it’s project focus- so when I learned of the 12 New Things, I thought it really fit the bill. Even though, you’d already be a month behind, I encourage you to join me and learn 12 New Things with the other lovely ladies participating.
Here’s what I’ll be working on over the next twelve months:
August– Milking a cow
Done… I’m slow and lack stamina, but I’ll get there with time. I’ll post a video this afternoon.
September– Cheesemaking
The fridge is filling faster than we can drink it… I’m just waiting in some books from the library.
October– Cable knit a sweater
November– Make a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread
December– Expand my repertoire and find 4 new venison recipes, maybe one each week
If my husband’s going to hunt, the least I can do is learn to cook it well.
(I did find 2 that we love- you can’t even tell it’s venison they’re so good! But when my computer died, I lost the links of the other recipes that I wanted to try. I won’t cross it out because, technically, I didn’t get it done.)
January– Plan an herb garden for the spring
I dabbled with herbs this year and loved it and am ready to find a little piece of land to commit to herbs.
February– Experiment with hydroponic lettuce
A preliminary step to dabbling with aquaponics.
March– Begin reading Home Educationby Charlotte Mason- I usually need a little encouragement by now! (This may take me a year to finish though!)
April– Learn to sew a zipper
May– Make a habit of Nature Journaling with the children
June– Learn to shoot firearms
My husband has been asking me for years now to learn, maybe this is a good time.
July– Study up on seed saving techniques for the fall
