One Year Ago: ~Week 33~
One of the blessings we did get to experience our first week were the newly ripened blackberries on the length of brambles pictured above.
I like that they’re thornless (I’m not sure what variety), seem very hardy compared to the raspberry vines also here, and while the chickens have found them a few times and helped themselves, wild birds don’t seem to care for them that I’ve noticed at least.
But I know who does! Baby Dear loves the berries and making a drippy, juicy, dribbled, stained up mess of herself with their goodness.
We gathered nearly 10 pounds the first day and maybe an average of 4 pounds every other day since. We’ve enjoyed them fresh, some I’ve frozen for jam making and I’ve tried out canning 4 quarts so far to see how we’ll like them that way. They’re supposed to can up well because the core holds them together.
They’ve taken the dullness out of oatmeal day by crushing a handful and swirling them in. Very delicious! I also really, really enjoyed Blackberry Butter on Whole Wheat toast and am hoping Bill will have time to fire up the grill and I can prepare some Blackberry BBQ sauce on grilled chicken.
Anyway, before I close this brief post today, I really would like to thank all of you for your wonderfully kind and extremely encouraging and edifying comments over the last week or so! It upsets me that I haven’t found the time to be able to respond to each and every one of them like I normally try to do, and am so far behind I don’t see that I will, but I look forward to when I can once again as dialoging with you is part of the blessing I find in writing.
