sweet pickled cucumber slices in hand

Yes, They CAN! (VIDEO)

Who said children can't preserve food? My children are excited to have learned how to can their own pickles! Let them show you how it's done.

My children have gone done and made their homesteading’ mama proud!

They’ve canned up their first batch of pickles and it turns out they’re such fine learners that yesterday when I had a bazillion things to do (all of which I think had to do with zucchini), I was able to ask Hannah to finish canning sweet pickled cucumber slices AND a batch of dill pickles.

And you know what? She did it without ANY help!

If I’m not careful, I might just be able to work myself out of a job! Sounds like a plan, don’t you think?

I’ll stop blabbing on and let them show you how to make your own pickle slices. You can get the recipe we use HERE.

Have you taught your children how to can yet?

  1. Congratulations to your children! Well done!! I have my tribe here watching. Discussion about another letter are now happening 🙂 Sorry about Ellie’s lack of letter writing. This video is wonderful. It was lovely to get a glimpse into your beautiful life!

  2. That looks like so much fun. We just canned 5ltr of apple porridge.. I think that is what Americans call apple sauce or maybe butter? I’m not sure…

    1. I’m in complete denial about the impending apple season- lol! It’s only June, right? I’m so not ready for winter! Applesauce is just steamed, pureed apples whereas the butter is thicker and heavily spiced and oh, so delicious. Ok. Fine. I guess I might be warming up to apple season 😉

      1. hmm we throw ours in a pot with vanilla beans and then just let it simmer until there is only a few chunks left. If the apples are VERY sour we may add a dash of sugar…

  3. They are all ADORABLE!! My kids are lovin’ the music…slapping and clapping around here this morning. Mariah says she has the ‘dishes in the background’ down to a T. Such a fun video! Now~I must find some pickles to snack on ;o)

    1. Yea! So glad you guys liked it! I went through like a hundred songs trying to find the right one and when I heard that one knew it was what I wanted. I tried my best to make it fit twice and even took the video to the chopping block to make it happen 😀 I was impressed with her dishes skills too and remember thinking at the time I wished she was like that ALL the time 😉 #showoff

  4. Looks like they had a great time doing it too! My oldest made his first pie today…that definitely wasn’t in my plans for the day but he was so excited I didn’t want to let him down. Now we have pie for dessert to look forward to.

    1. That’s awesome Tiffany!! I remember the first time I made pie. It was an apple pie from the Betty Crocker cookbook. Of course, I was 17 -lol! I’ll bet your son’s pie was delish!!
